Sciatic nerve pain - Are you still struggling with sciatic nerve pain?

Irritation to the nerve roots in the lower back often contributes to sciatic nerve pain. Sciatic nerve pain can be alleviated by changing the position of the lower back and by mobilizing the sciatic nerve.

Let’s say Sara had pain down her right leg. Her pain got worse when she sat at the office and she noticed less pain when walking around.
.
In the clinic, I assessed her symptoms by having her sit slouched in a chair for three minutes. Her right leg pain intensified.
.
Then I placed the Evercore lumbar support behind her lower back to maintain the arch of her spine which placed her spine in a neutral position.

With the Evercore lumbar support behind Sara‘s lower back, her leg pain reduced and centralized. Centralized leg pain means that her pain moved to the center of her lower back and out of the leg.

Meniscus tears - Have you ever experienced a meniscus tear? Did you have surgery or are you still struggling with it?

Meniscal injuries are really common knee injuries. About 13 out of 100 people have a meniscus tear.

And there is an increased incidence of meniscal tears with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries too! In other words, an ACL injury increases your risk of a meniscus tear.

Sciatica - Have you tried and failed to reduce sciatic nerve pain? (Follow a structured program to recover)
Irritation to the nerves in the lower back can send pain signals down the leg. Inflammation, movements, and body positions can influence the nerves resulting in leg pain.
Today, we’ll discuss how movements and body positions can affect sciatica.
Sara was an office manager who she sat at her desk 8 hours per day. Her lower back started to hurt by the end of the day.
Over the next two months, she started to feel more pain in her right hip when sitting. Then, the pain began to travel down the back of her right leg to the knee.
When sitting upright and walking around, Sara noticed less pain in her leg and less soreness in her lower back.
She will likely benefit from the press-up exercise. In fact, most people benefit from extending their lower back and maintaining the normal arch of the low back when sitting.

Is it good or bad if the knees move past the toes?

Is it good or bad if the knees move past the toes?
The answer is yes. Huh?
For example, let’s say Tom had patellofemoral pain. With patellofemoral pain, Tom felt pain in the front of his knee underneath the knee cap.
Tom plays basketball and his knee goes over his toe frequently. During his initial rehab, we avoided having his knee go over the toe to minimize the strain placed on the cartilage underneath the patella (knee cap). His pain reduced and his strength improved. Now, he wants to get ready to play basketball again.
We’ll gradually start to train him with exercises like squats and lunges with the knees moving past the toes to prepare him to return to basketball practice with his team.
For Tom, knees over toes is “good” to avoid injuring his knee while playing basketball, but it was “bad” when his knees were really flared up and sensitive.
The knees over toes debate is conditional depending on the person’s stage of injury recovery, pain sensitivity, fitness level, goals, and other factors.
It may be best to avoid knees over toes if this movement increases knee pain until the person can tolerate the movement with proper training.

Can you tell which exercise is out of place?
I just posted 5 exercises for meniscus tear recovery. (The exercises are slightly different for each person depending on your situation). One of the exercises does not match the others. Can you tell which one?

Hint: Four of these exercises focus on mobility of the knee. One of the exercises focuses on hip strength.
After a meniscus tear, there is often pain and limited motion in the knee. If a flap of the torn meniscus obstructs the knee joint, there is usually a significant loss of knee motion.
During rehab, the first step is often to restore motion in the knee prior to adding weight and resistance onto the knee.
A healthy knee is a knee that has full pain-free motion. Moving your knee often will promote meniscus recovery.
